Court hands life sentences to mother, stepfather over murder of 23-year-old man
A criminal court in Kastoria, northern Greece, on Wednesday handed life sentences for murder to the mother and stepfather of 23-year-old Costis Polyzos, whose body was found buried in a field in September 2011.
The court heard that the stepfather killed the victim during a row in the family home and subsequently buried the body in a field aided by his wife.
According to police reports, the pair had taken out a loan in the victim’s name, a move which subsequently led to a series of family disputes.
Although the pair consistently denied the charges, and their lawyers insisted that there was no evidence linking them to the 23-year-old’s murder, the judges adopted the recommendation of the prosecutor for their conviction.
