Fatalities reported as fire breaks out at Lesvos migrant camp

A large fire has reportedly broken out at the refugee processing center of Moria on the southeastern Aegean of Lesvos, with aid workers and authorities saying that there have been fatalities and multiple injuries.

Reports started coming in the early hours of Friday suggesting that a woman and one or two of her children were killed as flames engulfed their tent after an explosion, possibly from a cooking gas canister.

The Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms tweeted that a woman and two children were “confirmed dead,” while another aid group, Platanos Refugee Solidarity, was quoted by Skai.gr as adding that the camp has been evacuated and the fire brought under control.

The Greek Police have confirmed the explosion and that there have been casualties, without going into further detail.

Other sources also suggested that at least eight residents of the camp have been injured, some critically, while putting the fatalities at two.

There have also been reports of clashes between migrants staying at the camp and riot police responding to the explosion.
