ND leader on Epirus tour as opposition gears up for snap polls

Opposition chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis embarked on a two-day tour of Epirus on Friday, mobilizing the conservative party mechanism for the eventuality of early elections.

“Our time is near,” Mitsotakis told his lawmakers at a meeting earlier this week, as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras warned his leftist MPs that a collapse in talks with foreign creditors to wrap up the current bailout review could lead to snap polls.

On Friday, Mitsotakis is expected in the northwestern town of Arta for the inauguration of a party office, while on Saturday evening he is scheduled to speak at a hotel in the city of Ioannina. The conservative leader will also be meeting with business representatives and local officials.

His tour was initially planned for Thrace in northeastern Greece, but was cancelled after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his own intention to visit the same region on the same dates.

On his tour, the conservative leader is expected to outline the party’s recommendations for boosting the economy as well as Greece’s geopolitical role in the broader region.

Tsipras, meanwhile, was meeting constituents and party officials in Thrace on Friday.
