Smart cards for public transport to be introduced early 2017

Smart cards for public transport in Athens are finally expected to be introduced in early 2017 after several years of delays, sources said Friday.

The Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) has already installed several machines on the Athens metro and the Athens-Piraeus Electric Railway (ISAP) where passengers will have to swipe their cards on beginning and ending their journeys.

Commuters will be able to load credit onto the smart cards ahead of their journeys. Similar machines are to be installed on buses, trolley buses and trams.
