Man missing in Zakynthos flood found dead

A 33-year-old man who was reported missing amid downpours on the island of Zakynthos in the early hours of Sunday has been found dead, some 3 kilometers from the flooded ravine where his car was discovered.

Authorities on the Ionian island were alerted to the man’s disappearance on Sunday morning after his family reported that they had not heard from him since around 11 p.m. on Saturday and couldn’t reach him on his cellphone.

Fire service workers found the man’s car in a flooded ravine in the area of Vanato near the island’s eastern coast and called in the EMAK disaster relief squad, which launched a large-scale operation that ended later on Sunday with the discovery of the man’s drowned body some 3 kilometers downstream.

The victim’s identity was not immediately made public.
