Long arm of Boras reaches out for coach

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – A Swedish town has asked a debt-collecting agency to make Greek national basketball coach Yiannis Ioannidis pay a 4,000-crown (433-euro) fine for setting off an alarm by smoking, local radio reported yesterday. Ioannidis, who was elected to Parliament in the March 7 polls, allegedly defied a smoking ban in the basketball arena in Boras in southern Sweden during the European championships in September. Local public service radio news in Boras reported his smoking set off the arena’s fire alarm and the Boras fire brigade rushed to the scene. The town sent Ioannidis a bill for the unnecessary fire call but did not get paid and, after a reminder went unanswered, it hired the debt-collecting agency. Ioannidis said yesterday he was unaware of the matter. «This is the first I have heard of this,» he told Reuters.
