Road accident leaves schoolgirl, 14, in critical condition

A 14-year-old girl was in the hospital with serious injuries on Thursday after a bus rolled into her as she awaited a school bus at a nearby stop in the small town of Kotyli, near Xanthi, in northern Greece.

According to local reports, the driver of the bus had been delivering newspapers to a nearby kiosk when his vehicle started rolling backwards and crashed into a stop where the girl had been waiting for the school van.

It appears that the bus's hand brake dysfunctioned but local traffic police were seeking to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The 14-year-old girl sustained brain injuries which were said to be serious but not life-threatening.
