Bloody bar heist leaves one dead

One customer was fatally injured and five more suffered slight gunshot wounds in a central Athens bar early yesterday when two men robbed the establishment at gunpoint. The gunmen entered the Lido at 3 Mikromanis Street in Ambelokipi after midnight, sat down and ordered drinks – which they proceeded to down before drawing pistols and informing the bar’s employees and the few remaining patrons that a robbery was under way. After taking 500 euros from the till, the robbers, who, according to witnesses, were not native Greek speakers, asked the customers to empty their purses. One man who tried to resist was shot in the leg, and the rest produced a total of 300 euros. On their way out, the gunmen started shooting in the air and in the direction of the terrified people in the bar, wounding four men and a woman. All were taken to hospital, where Spyros Dakolias, 39, succumbed to his injuries. Police sources said the robbers were believed to be Albanian nationals.
