Locals in the southern Peloponnese town of Kalamata, dressed up as fighters in the Greek War of Independence, yesterday commemorated the effort to liberate Greece with a performance and a memorial service for those who died in the long struggle. Although Greece commemorates March 25, 1821, as the start of the war, the military leader Theodoros Kolokotronis began his campaign two days earlier in Kalamata.
