A guard from Nigrita Prison in northern Greece was in hospital with a fractured rib Friday after being set upon by a group of inmates who beat him in the early hours of the morning. The attack began at around 1 a.m. when the guard responded to a request for help by one of the inmates.
A group of prisoners subsequently attacked him, hurling objects at him, and one beat him with a broom, leaving him with serious rib injuries. He was transferred to the local health center for medical attention and then relocated to Serres’s general hospital once medics determined the seriousness of his injuries.
The exact circumstances behind the attack remained unclear. Nigrita Prison gained notoriety in 2014 when an Albanian inmate was tortured to death by guards.
