Minister defends Kammenos over contentious call

The alleged phone conversation between Panos Kammenos and a former shipowner currently serving life in prison for heroin smuggling remained a source of acrimony on Wednesday as the government sought to offer its backing to the defense minister.

Speaking in Parliament, Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis said the conversation wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as Kammenos was trying to uncover the facts.

His remarks prompted opposition lawmakers to claim the government was seeking to exonerate Kammenos’s behavior.

Kammenos allegedly asked Makis Yiannousakis to testify against a businessman in exchange for support from the government so that he would receive preferential treatment.
