Thessaloniki trash cleanup moving at quick pace
The municipal authority of Thessaloniki in northern Greece is moving at full throttle to clear up trash that has piled up on the city streets during a two-week strike by garbage collectors.
Starting Thursday evening when the strike was called off, the local authority has launched 32 garbage trucks and nine recycling collection trucks into the city streets to collect an estimated 1,000 tons of festering trash. By Thursday night, emergency crews dispatched early in the day had managed to collect about half that amount.
A municipal official, Thomas Psarras, told the ANA-MPA agency that the authority expects Thessaloniki to be completely cleaned up by Sunday. He added that cleaning crews and water trucks are also out in force, washing down streets and pavements, as well as dumpsters.
