Search for 600 million euros in compensation is top priority

To get back to the problems. The programs for young farmers have not increased the percentage of younger people in the farming population. We foresee a more concerted effort regarding the program to attract young people to the sector, with an aggressive policy and a simplification of procedures. Also important is the integrated management of farm production with the certification of products and food. Credit for the manufacturing, trade and marketing of products is almost exhausted, so we have begun a search for more resources. We aim to promote livestock production since, after fuel, we spend more on dairy and livestock products than other European Union member states or third countries. Also important are changes to the system of insuring production. We have promised to fully cover risks and to pay compensation within three months of the date the product should have gone on the market. About 300 million euros is needed to compensate farmers for recent crop damage. When will it be paid? In reality, we need twice that amount to cover commitments by the previous government pending since 2001. To begin any policy, we have to find twice the amount and it is one of the first issues on the agenda of the new administration of the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA).
