Two shot in separate Athens armed heists

Two people suffered gunshot wounds after trying to avert two separate armed robberies in southern Athens yesterday. Both were hospitalized and out of danger. Around 10 a.m., three armed men attacked two security guards, carrying a box with 30,000 euros from a supermarket on the corner of Amfitritis and Areos streets, in Palaio Faliron, to their armored van which was parked a considerable distance away. As the robbers fled with the cash, one of the guards, Dimitris Karagounis, 43, shot at them. The gunmen returned fire, hitting Karagounis once in the leg. Also, just after midnight, an armed man tried to wrest a bag containing 50,000 euros from businessman Sotiris Vossos, 46, as he was placing it in the boot of his car outside 232 Syngrou Avenue. Vossos resisted and hung on to the bag, despite being shot twice in the leg. The gunman ran away as bystanders rushed to the spot.
