Briton jailed for attack on donkey rider, 84

A court in northern Greece yesterday jailed a British tourist for a drunken assault on an 84-year-old man and his donkey on the island of Thassos. Aaron Watson, a 26-year-old Londoner, had been driving a friend’s jeep outside the village of Rachoni on Thursday evening when he came across Socrates Gerovangelis on his donkey. According to an Athens News Agency report from Kavala, where the trial was held, Watson – who lacked a driving license and was drunk – pulled the elderly man off his donkey for no apparent reason and hit him. He then tied the donkey to the back of the jeep and drove off. But the halter eventually broke and the battered beast managed to make its way back, riderless, to Rachoni. Gerovangelis was eventually located by the roadside, while the police were notified and arrested the Briton. Watson was sentenced to 26 months’ imprisonment.
