Government and unions still at odds over civil servant evaluation

A clash between the government and unionists representing the country’s civil servants is intensifying as public sector workers appear divided over a controversial evaluation scheme demanded by Greece’s international creditors.

According to government sources, the rate of participation in the evaluation scheme in central government offices is 70 percent, rising to 90 percent in certain ministries. The same sources acknowledge, however, that the rate of participation at local authority services is significantly lower.

In a statement Wednesday, the umbrella union for local authority workers, known by its acronym POE-OTA, accused the government of spreading “propaganda,” claiming that the rate of non-participation in the evaluation scheme in 21 municipalities ranges from 54 to 100 percent.

The union called on employees to continue boycotting the scheme and staging protest actions such as sit-ins at local authority offices.
