Supreme Court orders probe into homophobic newspaper front page

A Supreme Court prosecutor has launched a preliminary investigation over the October 11 front page of the Eleftheri Ora daily newspaper, which made homophobic references and incited violence against gay people.

The probe was ordered by Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou.

Making reference to the recent gender identity bill passed into law on Tuesday, the paper’s front page described the 148 lawmakers who voted for the bill in what it dubbed the “transvestite parliament” as “perverts” and called for physical assaults against gay people.

The prosecutor’s move came after Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis filed a complaint citing Greece’s anti-discrimination law.
