ESHEA condemns homophobic front page

The Athens Journalists’ Union (ESHEA) has condemned a homophobic front page of the Eleftheri Ora newspaper, which incited readers to attack gay people, as “disgusting and bigoted.”

The edition published on Wednesday denounced a gender identity bill that was voted into law in Parliament on Tuesday.

The paper described the 148 lawmakers that voted for it as “perverts” and called for physical assaults against gay people.

In a statement Friday, the union also said that the paper’s attack against the “transvestite” Parliament was an affront to democratic institutions.

The outcry over the publication prompted a Supreme Court prosecutor to order a preliminary investigation into the matter.
