Ban on fishing trawlers extended by two months

The ban on fishing trawlers in the Saronic Gulf has been extended by another two months, authorities said on Monday.

The ban, a joint decision by Agricultural Development Minister Vangelis Apostolou and representatives of fishermen that use trawlers, was extended as a precaution until the relevant studies of the water quality in the area are completed by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE).

The Saronic Gulf, including the southern shores of Athens, were severely polluted by an oil slick caused by the sinking of a tanker off the island of Salamina in September.
