Premier’s US trip fails to cut into ND’s lead, survey finds

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s recent official visit to the United States failed to cut into New Democracy’s lead, according to a new survey published Monday.

The poll, conducted by the University of Macedonia, found that 31 percent of Greeks would vote for the conservative opposition if elections were held today, compared to 18 percent who said they would back the ruling SYRIZA party. Neo-fascist Golden Dawn emerged as the third largest political force with 7 percent, while Democratic Alignment was on 6.5 percent and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) on 5.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the survey showed that Tsipras’s US trip failed to prop up the image of his administration, with 46.5 percent of respondents saying they didn’t believe the visit and the deals signed between Athens and Washington were in Greece’s interests. Meanwhile, 47.5 percent said the trip had not bolstered Tsipras’s image as a leader.

Overall, only 6.5 percent of those polled said they were satisfied with the government’s performance.
