Theodorakis outlines road map for new center-left party
To Potami and Democratic Alignment (PASOK) will retain their parliamentary groups after the formation of the new center-left party by the end of the year, according to Stavros Theodorakis, one of the nine candidates aspiring to lead the movement.
In a press conference on Tuesday in the wake of Monday’s televised debate between the candidates, Theodorakis, who is the leader of To Potami, said that after the November 19 elections the leadership of the new party must serve as a guide to the parliamentary groups of both parties.
The two parliamentary groups will be retained until the spring when the new party holds its founding congress, he said.
However, the decision to retain the parliamentary groups of both parties was slammed by one of the candidates, Yiannis Ragousis – a former minister and a strong presence in socialist PASOK – who accused both leaders of having struck an under-the-table deal.
He said the “secret agreement” impeded efforts to unify the center-left, and urged Theodorakis and the leader of Democratic Alignment Fofi Gennimata to rescind the deal.
