Police confident they got their man for lawyer’s killing
The Greek Police (ELAS) on Wednesday issued an announcement saying that its investigation into the murder of a prominent criminal lawyer has come to an end with the arrest of a 32-year-old Albanian national accused of carrying out the contract killing.
In a lengthy press release, ELAS said it has overwhelming evidence supporting the case that the 32-year-old unnamed suspect was a contract killer who had been paid to intimidate or eliminate 52-year-old Michalis Zafeiropoulos last month.
Officers also reportedly have the suspect’s confession that he and another fellow Albanian, aged 30, were paid 3,000 euros to coerce the lawyer into handing over files pertaining to a criminal case against three people in custody at the capital’s Korydallos Prison, one of which was being represented by Zafeiropoulos.
According to the announcement, the 32-year-old is a fugitive who escaped in September while on furlough from Kassandra Prison in northern Greece. He has a long record that includes charges of rape, murder, kidnapping, forgery and migrant smuggling. He is also accused of shooting at a group of Albanians in September at a bust public square in the Athens suburb of Kallithea. His alleged accomplice is also wanted on other charges including robbery and illegal weapons possession.
The three men suspected of having ordered the hit stand accused of forming a criminal organization and attempted murder, among other charges.
