Frigate runs aground in Saronic Gulf; no injuries or leaks reported

A Hellenic Navy frigate ran aground shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday morning in shallows off the coast of the Atalanti islet in the Saronic Gulf, authorities said, adding that there were no injuries reported.

Divers have already examined the Kanaris’s hull and ascertained that it has not taken on water or sprung any dangerous fuels leaks, giving the green light for it to be towed to the Salamina naval station.

An investigation will be carried out to determine whether the incident was caused by human error or a mechanical failure.

The incident comes less than two months after a small oil tanker sank in the Saronic Gulf, spewing fuel into the sea and polluting beaches on the island of Salamina and on Athens’s southern coast.
