Clampdown on illegal parking in Thessaloniki

The city of Thessaloniki is on Monday launching a new scheme restricting parking in the downtown area in a bid to curb traffic congestion.

In the first phase of the scheme, motorists will have to pay to park in the historic district of Ano Poli, as well as on certain stretches of Pavlou Mela, Mitropoleos, Ermou and Ethnikis Amynas.

“I have no doubt that there will be reactions and the people will curse us, but we need to impose some order,” Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris said last week, stressing that strictly controlled parking is an effective way of cracking down on violations.
