Parliament to be lit up in orange Saturday night

The Greek Parliament building will be lit up in orange on Saturday night to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The initiative comes after the Greek branch of the European Women’s Lobby held a conference on Friday where it presented data showing that 16.5 million women around the world are victims of violence and 50 women in the European Union are murdered every week by a current or former partner.

"Violence appears everywhere,” said Mika Ioannidou of the lobby’s Greek branch, stressing that female refugees and migrants in Greece are particularly vulnerable.

“Women and girls fall victim to uncontrolled violence, rape and sexual pressure, usually from their smugglers.”
