Citizen hands in grenade at Ambelokipi precinct

Bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the Ambelokipi police precinct just north of central Athens on Monday afternoon to take control of a hand grenade handed in by a citizen, who claimed he had found it on the street.

The incident came several hours after a grenade attack on a police precinct in nearby Kaisariani, which injured a bystander and was allegedly carried out to express solidarity with Constantinos Giagtzoglou, the jailed terrorist suspect who is on hunger strike, demanding his transfer back to Attica's high-security Korydallos Prison from a Larissa penitentiary.

It also caused additional concern among the officers on duty, as it coincided with the processing of journalist Costas Vaxevanis, who had been arrested on the basis of a defamation suit filed by former prime minister Antonis Samaras.
