Gender pay gap shrinks below EU average in Cyprus
Cyprus is making steady progress in reducing the pay gap between men and women, data from the European statistical authority, Eurostat, showed on Wednesday.
According to figures for 2016, the unadjusted gender pay gap in Cyprus stood at 13.9 percent against an EU average of 16 percent, meaning that women earned 0.84 euros to every 1 euro made by a man.
This was a decline from 16.1 percent in 2011 and 14 percent in 2015, showing steady progress.
Released ahead of International Women’s Day on Thursday, the data showed that the gender pay gap in Romania came to 5.2 percent, in Italy to 5.3 percent and in Luxembourg to 5.5 percent.
Estonia was the worst performer at 25.3 percent, followed by the Czech Republic (21.8 percent), Germany (21.5 percent), the United Kingdom (21 percent) and Austria (20.1 percent).
