Karamanlis and Erdogan discussed the Cyprus issue in their talks, following the rejection of the UN’s reunification plan by Greek Cypriots on April 24. Neither mentioned the issue in their statements after the meeting but Karamanlis commented on it in response to a question as to whether Turkey would seek recognition for the breakaway Turkish-Cypriot state. «The European Union, in effect, has taken the whole of Cyprus as a member. Of course, with a special dispensation for its northern sector,» he said. «For us, the issue has been solved and has been dealt with. There is no such issue. From there on, I applaud the Republic of Cyprus’s policy in its emphatic wish to support the Turkish Cypriots, mainly economically.» In an interview with state television channel NET, Erdogan said: «We discussed the Cyprus issue with Mr Karamanlis. Greek-Turkish relations must not be affected by the Cyprus issue.» This is something that Karamanlis too has said.
