Evathlos at Konitsa
From May 28 to 31, the town of Konitsa in northwestern Greece will be the venue for a kind of minor Olympic Games for adventure sports. That’s the Evathlos, a regular event in the world of alternative sports, which is being held for the eighth successive year and is expected to host some 400 athletes. This year’s schedule includes 38 kilometers of cross-border rafting on the River Aoos, a 42-kilometer (26-mile) mountain bike race and a mountain marathon. But what is expected to steal the show is the Greek Paragliding Cup, which will be held as part of the overall event. The competition will last three days and top Greek paragliders will be participating. «Standards at the Evathlos are equal to other events organized abroad. More and more people watch it year by year,» said Thanassis Kirtzolgou, a rafting guide and member of No Limits. Participation costs 50 euros (www.evathlos.gr, www.paragliding.gr).
