An elite navy unit boards a ship during an anti-terrorism exercise off Athens yesterday. Some 70,000 Greek personnel will be deployed during the Olympics. Also yesterday, 350 security officials from Interpol, Europol and the 202 nations taking part in the Games wrapped up a three-day meeting in Athens. Most delegates expressed confidence in security preparations. ‘The appropriate things are being done, everybody is working hard, they are going to make the safest Games possible,’ said Larry M. Buendorf, chief security officer for the US Olympic Committee. ‘There is obviously no way of knowing what the world holds tomorrow, but you do the very best you can.’ NATO has confirmed it will provide AWACS early-warning planes.
