D-DAY ANNIVERSARY

French honor Greek veteran Greek D-Day invasion veteran Grigoris Pavlakis, 83, is made a Knight of the Legion of Honor by French President Jacques Chirac during yesterday’s celebrations in Arromanches, Normandy, for the 60th anniversary of the World War II allied landings. One of 14 veterans to be honoured, Pavlakis was an officer on the Kriezis – one of the two Greek corvettes participating in operation Overlord – that took part in the first invasion wave. President Costis Stephanopoulos was one of the many officials attending yesterday’s celebrations. Drownings The corpses of nine people, probably illegal immigrants, have been found in the sea near the islet of Koufonissi off southern Crete, the Athens News Agency reported yesterday. According to the ANA, four more drowned corpses have been found in the same area over the past few weeks. Several hundred illegal immigrants, mostly from Egypt, were arrested in southern Crete last month. Floods Heavy storms on Saturday night caused severe flooding in parts of northern Greece yesterday. Large expanses of cropland were inundated in the areas of Polycastro and Eordaia, while the road network suffered extensive damage.
