Fewer lanes

The traffic restrictions that will be in force from July 20 to late September are a headache for companies running organized beaches in the Saronic Gulf. The Olympic Games transport plan allows only Olympic Family vehicles, express buses for spectators and emergency vehicles to use the left-hand lane of Poseidon Avenue in each direction as far as Varkiza, restricting private cars to two lanes. «It isn’t clear how one can get to the beach,» Christos Grigoriadis of Varkiza Beach SA told Kathimerini. «There are many arterial roads by which one can get here, but we have no information about what will happen with Olympic timetables, routes and so on.» Officials hope that the tram will reduce congestion up to Glyfada. But access to the beaches will be problematic, especially during the Games, as there will be similar restrictions in operation on other roads in Attica. That is why officials are urging Athenians to use public transport.
