Addict, 26, held for bakery murder A 26-year-old drug addict arrested on suspicion of having killed a 44-year-old bakery worker in the Athenian suburb of Aghios Dimitrios on Friday night has confessed to shooting the woman dead during a robbery to finance his addiction, police said on Saturday. Theofilos Lazarakis asked Eleftheria Gliva to hand over the bakery’s takings but shot her before she had time to react, police said. He then raided the cash register and fled on a stolen scooter before being stopped by traffic police who arrested him following a violent scuffle. Stabbing A 37-year-old mentally disturbed schoolteacher arrested for stabbing her husband in the heart early on Saturday morning at their Lamia home confessed to having done so because he had been pressuring her to take her medicine, police said. Ourania Drosini killed her 40-year-old husband, Vassilis Ziakas, after arguing with him for several hours, police said, adding that Drosini’s 7-year-old son had been sleeping in the adjacent bedroom. Crash at sea An unidentified jet-skier was killed yesterday after he collided with a 7-meter speedboat off the island of Salamina, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. The three people in the speedboat were unharmed, the ministry said. Traffic accident A 43-year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter died late on Saturday night when the man lost control of the car he was driving on the Thessaloniki-Evzones national road after hitting a stray dog. Nikolaos Sotiroudis and his daughter Aikaterini were killed instantly when the car crashed into a tree on the roadside. The man’s 12-year-old son, Constantinos, was seriously injured. Zolotas buried Professor Xenophon Zolotas, a former prime minister and leading economist credited with reviving the Greek economy after World War II, was buried in Athens’s First Cemetery on Saturday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, Economy Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Bank of Greece Governor Nikos Garganas and Parliament Speaker Anna Psarouda-Benaki. Zolotas died on Thursday at the age of 100. GM crops An estimated 17 hectares of genetically modified (GM) corn plantations in Kavala will be destroyed, prefectural authorities pledged yesterday following state inspections on the land.
