Minister pledges to have emergency line 112 ready by year-end

Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis on Thursday reiterated a government pledge to have the Europe-wide 112 emergency phone number up and running by the end of 2019.

Speaking at an event organized by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection in Athens, Pierrakakis said authorities have resolved the system’s problems that became apparent in the summer.

The secretariat’s head, Nikos Hardalias, said the toll-free 112 number is only for use in “major emergencies.”

The line will remain operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
