New restrictions for city motorists
Police yesterday announced a new set of major restrictions for motorists driving in the capital, to facilitate Olympic traffic on Friday’s opening ceremonies as well as cyclists competing in the city center. From 3 p.m. on Friday to 2 a.m. on Saturday, all non-Games related vehicles will be banned from Vassilissis Sofias Avenue from the Hilton Hotel to the Ambelokipi junction, on Kifissias Ave from Ambelokipi to the Attiki Odos and on Kymis Ave from the Attiki Odos to Tralleon Street. To allow cyclists to practice tomorrow on the route which starts and ends at central Korai Square, drivers will be banned between 4.45 and 7 p.m. from the following streets: Athinas, Stadiou, Aeolou, Patission, Alexandras, Ippocratous, Academias, Kanari, Patriarchou Ioakeim, Irodotou, Spefsippou, Glykonos, Xanthippou, Cleomenous, Rogakou, Sarantapichou, Paligennesias, Koniari, Mercouri, Anapiron Polemou, Souidias, Gennadiou, Vassilissis Sofias, Vassilissis Amalias, Dionysiou Areopagitou, Apostolou Pavlou and Ermou streets. The actual race will be held on the weekend, when longer bans will be in force.
