Guard’s loot found in supermarket toilets
A security guard working for a company handling large cash transfers has been arrested on suspicion of pocketing 100,000 US dollars of his employers’ money during one of the shipments and hiding it in a supermarket toilet, police said yesterday. The 23-year-old guard, whose name was not made public, allegedly removed the sum – worth some 81,000 euros – from a much larger amount of foreign currency he and a colleague were driving in an armored van from Athens to the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, to be flown to Thessaloniki. Police said the suspect had admitted to hiding the cash in the armored van when the other guard was not looking, and then stashing it away in the toilets of a supermarket near where the cash shipments started off from. A check in Thessaloniki revealed the theft, and the cash was duly recovered from its cache.
