Judgment Day ‘will bring back Asia Minor’
One day, Greece will win «vindication» for the loss, following the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish war, of millennia-old Greek homelands in Asia Minor, Archbishop Christodoulos said yesterday. But it may be a long wait. During a speech in the northern town of Ptolemaida, the head of the Church of Greece told an audience consisting of refugees from Asia Minor and their descendants that «all Greeks… live with the expectation of vindication» for the loss of what is now Aegean Turkey. «And if God does not allow that to happen earlier, on the blessed Day of Judgment the pale angels of the refugees… will set off for our unforgotten homelands, crossing the blue Aegean on the wings of the wind,» he said. In a controversial sermon in May 2003, Christodoulos referred to the Turks as «barbarians» who have no place in the «Christian family» of Europe.
