Olympic traffic lanes won’t outstay Games
The half-faded orange lines on main Athenian thoroughfares that demarcate lanes for the exclusive use of Olympics-related traffic will cease to have any practical application from Tuesday morning, officials said yesterday. Initial plans to retain the so-called «Olympic Lanes» during the September 17-28 Paralympics were abandoned following a series of meetings on the matter yesterday. Traffic police and Games organizing officials agreed that, if necessary, special driving restrictions would be adopted during the Paralympics to facilitate transportation of athletes and officials to and from sports venues. Driving, but not parking, restrictions around Olympic venues will remain in place during the Paralympics. The Olympic lanes will remain in use until 1 a.m. – an hour later than usual – today and over the weekend, when several sporting events are due to finish around midnight.
