Municipal Police of Thessaloniki draw up homeless register

The Municipal Police of Thessaloniki is carrying out intensive checks in order to record the number of homeless people that are scattered throughout the city and to know where they tend to seek shelter ahead of winter.

According to authorities, most of the homeless, despite the existence of a city shelter and open care centers, reportedly refuse to seek assistance, even during periods when temperatures plummet.

As part of the effort, the Municipal Police is creating a Digital Map of the Homeless, which is being distributed to the relevant bodies of the municipality, so that, as soon as the temperature drops, they will know where the homeless are and how they can support them, with food distribution, blankets and clothes and basic necessities.

The latest census found about 40 spots in the city in where 48 homeless people sought shelter.

According to reports, the demographic profile of the homeless in the city is mainly males, Greeks and foreigners, aged between 45 and 50.
