Athens suburbs face more flooding woes
Several Athenian suburbs are in danger of flooding at the first sight of heavy rain, Public Works Minister Giorgos Souflias warned yesterday after a meeting with relevant bodies. Souflias specifically named neighborhoods such us Moschato, Rendi and Glyfada along with eastern Attica and areas that border the Ilissos River as being particularly prone to flooding. The minister cited the building of tramlines through Glyfada as exacerbating the situation in the suburb because no drainage had been installed under the tracks. He said he would be coordinating with the Transport Ministry to rectify the problem as soon as possible. Souflias met with local government and water board representatives in order to devise a plan of action to protect Athens from flooding. He said his ministry had already dispatched five teams to clean drains around the capital.
