Euthanasia completely ruled out

The draft Medical Practice Code makes special reference to the sensitive subject of euthanasia, following extensive discussion. The committee which drew up the code has adopted a clear stand against euthanasia, stating: «Doctors must stand by patients until the end of their life and see that they retain their dignity to that point.» In the case of an incurable illness in the final stages when all medical treatment has proved ineffective, «the doctor must continue to relieve the patient’s physical and mental pain.» The code of ethics does not permit the practice of euthanasia, even when requested by patients or their relatives.
