Public sector out of service

Services at state hospitals, schools, tax offices and local administration offices are expected to be severely disrupted by today’s 24-hour strike called by the country’s umbrella civil servant union (ADEDY). Although the strike will not affect public transport – barring disruptions to be caused by an ADEDY demonstration through central Athens at 11 a.m. – flights will be disrupted due to a four-hour work stoppage by air traffic controllers from noon to 4 p.m. Olympic Airlines said yesterday they were canceling 24 domestic flights, rescheduling 17 international flights and laying on two extra domestic flights – from Athens to Iraklion and Athens to Thessaloniki. People planning to fly Olympic today should call 210.966.6666 for further details. Aegean Airlines flights will also be affected. ADEDY is seeking increases in the basic pay rate and higher bonuses. The march will start from Klafthmonos Square, and will wind up Stadiou Street to the Finance Ministry off Syntagma Square.
