Parliament gets doping report

The most politically sensitive section of the judicial investigation into the doping scandal involving Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou was forwarded to Parliament yesterday by Supreme Court prosecutor Dimitris Linos. The house will now have to decide whether there is sufficient evidence to allow the prosecution of PASOK former sports ministers for illegally providing huge subsidies to the two runners, their coach and the national weightlifting coach through an obscure sports club called Ajax. The full report by prosecutors Athina Theodoropoulou and Spiros Mouzakitis recommended that the two disgraced star sprinters and Olympic medalists should be prosecuted for allegedly dodging a doping test on the eve of the Athens Games and faking a motorcycle accident for their cover story, according to judicial sources. It also urged action against the athletes’ coach, Christos Tzekos – for possession of illegal performance-enhancing substances – and doctors at the Athens KAT hospital who backed the sprinters’ claim to have been injured in the supposed crash.
