Red light for Cyprus porn

NICOSIA (AFP) – Cypriot police have ordered kiosk owners to clear out stocks of pornographic magazines and videos by next Monday, amid growing public concern over the easy availability of hard-core goods. «Under the law, the sale, display or rental of pornography is illegal and police have given sellers a deadline until December 27 to remove the offending material,» police spokesman Demetris Demetriou told AFP yesterday. «If not, people will be charged and the material confiscated.» The authorities asked for legal clarification of the obscenity law after women’s pressure groups complained that children were being exposed to a bevy of pornography every time they visited the sweet shop or local kiosk. Cyprus kiosks and souvenir shops openly display hard-core porn – be it DVDs, books or magazines – in full view, and alongside children’s comics or music discs.
