Traffic cop run over while diverting cars

A traffic policeman died early yesterday after he was hit by a car while diverting vehicles along the Ioannina-to-Athens highway near Arta in western Greece, police said. Dimitris Kontos, 42, was struck by a car driven by 43-year-old Albanian national Ili Nouhai, a resident of the northern Peloponnesian village of Korfos, shortly after midnight, according to officers. No other injuries were reported. Kontos had been diverting drivers at a section of the highway where there had been landslides. He was wearing fluorescent clothing, and cones with flashing lights had been set up to warn drivers of the upcoming diversion, police said. The car Nouhai was driving hit Kontos at some speed but the exact circumstances of the incident are not yet clear. Police presence on highways has been stepped up since December 22 in a bid for greater road safety over the festive period.
