City’s New Year celebrations…

The Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra plays in the capital’s central Kotzia Square, which hosted the city’s New Year celebrations. The concert included performances from singers Dionysis Savvopoulos, Nikos Portokaloglou and Giorgos Margaritis. Thousands gathered in front of City Hall to see in 2005 and Mayor Dora Bakoyannis led the crowd in a one-minute silence, before the countdown, in memory of those killed by the tidal waves in south Asia. Some 2,005 fireworks were then set off and a traditional New Year cake of 14 square meters was cut.
