Fugitive banker and his family shot dead

LARNACA (AFP) – Cyprus police launched a triple murder hunt on Saturday after a Turkish-Cypriot family was found shot dead on the side of the motorway in what authorities believe was a mafia-style killing, officials said. «We can’t be a 100 percent sure but this looks like a settling of old scores, either connected to financial circles or the regime in the occupied north,» said Justice Minister Doros Theodorou, ruling out any political motive. Wealthy businessman Elmaz Guzelyurtlu, 52; his wife Zerin, 50, and their 15-year-old daughter, who has yet to be named, were found dead by police on the Larnaca-Nicosia highway at Koshi early on Saturday. Guzelyurtlu was head of the Everest bank in the north and fled to the south after his bank collapsed along with others in 2000, causing a major economic crisis.
