Costumed dancers perform in Patras on Saturday at the official opening of the northwestern Peloponnesian city’s annual Carnival festivities, launched by Mayor Andreas Karavolas during an open-air party in central Georgiou Square. This year’s central theme is the protection of the environment. Traditionally the focus of Greek Carnival celebrations, Patras in recent years has faced strong competition from other places, such as Moschato in Athens.
