Warrant issued for Yiossakis

A controversial cleric, allegedly involved in the trial-fixing scandal, was being sought by the police late yesterday on the strength of an arrest warrant for antiquities theft. The warrant was issued hours after Archimandrite Iakovos Yiossakis appeared before an examining magistrate to testify on the antiquities theft charges – and received a 48-hour postponement to better prepare his defense – after a Piraeus prosecutor decided there was a risk of the priest trying to flee the country. The cleric is also alleged to have been a middleman in the trial-fixing scandal for which several judges are being investigated. But allegations with wider implications for the Church claim he was close to Archbishop Christodoulos. Today, the Church of Greece’s ruling body, the Holy Synod, is due to discuss the Yiossakis affair.
