A couple of children belonging to the pixie-worshipping Kalash tribes of northwestern Pakistan – who claim descent from the Greek soldiers of Alexander the Great – are pictured in a file picture. A 67-year-old British woman who has lived with the Kalash for the past 21 years has set up one of the two international groups trying to help the tribes. The other is run by a Greek volunteer. Maureen Lines’s work is now more vital than ever, as modern challenges such as tourism, overdevelopment, disease and, according to some experts, Muslim conversions, threaten to wipe out the unique Kalash culture.
